About the Study
The Global Access to Skin Health Observatory (Skin Observatory) study, a collaboration between the International League of Dermatologic Societies (ILDS) and L’Oreal Dermatologic Beauty, is led by Dr. Esther Freeman.
This ground-breaking global study aims to address the lack of comprehensive global data on the distribution of dermatologists and barriers to dermatologic care across all 194 WHO member state countries. While access to dermatologic carehas been studied in some countries or regions, there remains no consistent worldwide data. The study seeks to identify barriers to dermatologic care, including workforce shortages, limited training, infrastructure issues, and patient-related factors. Understanding these barriers is crucial for improving access to dermatologic care and addressing the global burden of skin disease, which remains the fourth leading cause of nonfatal disease burden while contributing to morbidity across all age groups.
The study will be launched in two phases. Phase 1, which is currently ongoing, is an online RedCap survey of key in-country leaders around the globe in all 194 WHO member states. Phase 2, which is projected to begin in 2025, will be a closer evaluation of a subset of countries at the public, patient, and healthcare provider level.
